Questions You May Have
While it is common to have belly button revision when you have a tummy tuck, in some cases a change to your belly button is desired without the need or desire to have more extensive abdominal surgery. Belly button surgery, also known as umbilicoplasty, is used to alter the look and shape of your belly button alone.
The shape of your belly button is determined at birth, but may change over time due to weight changes, pregnancy, or an umbilical (belly button) hernia. The experienced doctors at The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery can safely and easily give you the type of belly button you desire whether it means changing a protruding belly button (an "outie") into one that does not protrude (an "innie") or creating a horizontally shaped or a "T" shaped belly button.
If you have never been happy with the shape and size of your belly button or do not like the changes caused in your belly button due to pregnancy, weight gain, or umbilical hernia, you may be a candidate for belly button surgery. The doctors and staff at The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery will work with you to determine if this relatively simple surgical procedure is right for you.
To determine whether or not belly button surgery is appropriate for you and to ensure a safe and pleasing outcome, you will meet at length with the doctors and staff at The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery prior to your surgery. At this meeting, your belly button will be evaluated and you will discuss how you want your belly button to look after your surgery.

Your belly button revision surgery is performed at The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery. The procedure takes about one hour to complete and is performed under local anesthesia either with or without sedation depending on your wishes. The doctor makes a small incision in the belly button region and either removes excess skin or overhangs a tiny bit of abdominal skin on top of the belly button, depending on the result you desire.
Incisions are typically hidden within the belly button region and heal quickly and almost imperceptibly. Stitches are either dissolvable or are removed within seven to ten days.

Belly button revision surgery is performed at The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery. Since the treatment is simple and relatively painless, you can go home as soon as it is completed. In many cases, dissolvable stitches are used so there is no need to have them removed by the doctor. If regular sutures are used, they are removed within seven to ten days of your procedure.
Because belly button surgery causes very little swelling, bruising, or discomfort, most people return to work and normal activities either the same day or the day after the procedure. The healing process starts immediately.
· An umbilical hernia may be the cause of your belly button distortion. If this is the case, it will be repaired during your belly button surgery.
The risks associated with belly button revision surgery are extremely rare. Though, like with all surgical procedures, there are some risks. During your initial consultation with the doctors and staff of The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery, your individual risks will be assessed and discussed and it will be determined if you are a good candidate for the procedure. As with any surgery, you can help reduce the risks by closely following the pre and post-surgery instructions provided to you.
· Asymmetry
· Need for further surgery
· Scarring
Belly button surgery will revise your belly button to the shape and size you desire. The results of the surgery are permanent except in cases of large weight gain or pregnancy after surgery.
· Are there other procedures that could be done along with belly button surgery to enhance the overall appearance of my abdomen?
Many people have belly button revision performed at the same time as a tummy tuck. Liposuction or LipoSelection, a cutting edge form of liposuction performed only by a few specialists such as the doctors at The Metropolitan Institute for Plastic Surgery, can also be used to enhance the overall appearance of your abdomen.
Belly button surgery is considered cosmetic surgery and, therefore, is not covered by insurance. You are responsible for the full payment of the procedure. Cost and payment information will be fully discussed with you during your initial consultation.
